چکیده

On exploratory class missions to other planets astronauts will be exposed to types and doses of radiation that are not experienced in low earth orbit. While it is likely that the crew will consist of both male and female astronauts, there has been little research on the effects of exposure to space radiation on central nervous system function and cognitive performance in female subjects. Because estrogen can function as a neuroprotectant, the present experiments were designed to evaluate whether or not the presence or absence of estrogen at the time of irradiation would affect the susceptibility to the neurocognitive effects of exposure to Fe particles in female rats. Capsules containing 17β-estradiol or vehicle were implanted in ovariectomized rats three days prior to exposure Fe particles (50 200 cGy, 1000 MeV/n). Cognitive performance was evaluated using novel object recognition memory to measure learning and memory and operant responding on an ascending fixed-ratio schedule to measure changes in motivation and in the responsiveness to environmental contingencies. The results indicated the estrogen does not function as a neuroprotectant to minimize the cognitive effects of exposure to Fe particles. However, the presence/absence of estrogen at the time of irradiation could modulate the responsiveness of the subject to the disruptive effects of exposure to HZE particles on the performance of specific cognitive tasks.

Vitex Agnus Castus Extract Improves Learning and Memory and Increases the Transcription of Estrogen Receptor α in Hippocampus of Ovariectomized Rats

Introduction: Lower level of estrogen hormone is considered as an important factor for loss of learning and memory in postmenopausal women. Although estrogen replacement therapy is used for compensation, but long-term usage of estrogen is associated with a higher risk of hormonedependent cancers. Phytoestrogens, due to fewer side effects, have been proposed to prevent menopause-related co...

Comparison of the Effects of Aerobic Training with Vitamin C and Estradiol on Markers of the Liver among Ovariectomized and Normal Rats

Introduction: Postmenopausal estrogen deficiency, disturbance of the antioxidant defense system, and free radical production lead to oxidative stress. This results in metabolic disturbances affecting the liver. Therefore, it is important to properly evaluate the benefits of antioxidant administration and exercise on oxidative stress in the liver. The main purpose of this study was to compare th...

بررسی اثر عصاره گیاه پنج انگشت (Vitex agnus castus) بر یادگیری و حافظه در موش های صحرایی اوارکتومی شده

Background and purpose: Menopause is associated with the cessation of ovarian activities and hypoestrogenemia causing many complications including learning and memory disorders. Recent studies have shown that these cognitive disabilities are due to the diminished neuroprotective and neurotrophic effects of estrogen and accordingly, estrogen therapy may prevent or overcome them. Since estrogen t...

Gardenia oil increases estradiol levels and bone material density by a mechanism associated with upregulation of COX-2 expression in an ovariectomized rat model

This study aimed to determine the effects and mechanisms of gardenia oil on bone density and bone biomechanics in ovariectomized female rats. An ovariectomized rat model was established and the rats were administered various doses of gardenia oil. Rats administered diethylstilbestrol or saline served as the positive and the untreated controls, respectively. All rats received the same surgery, w...
